Supreme Court Justice William Rehnquist is sworn in in 1986. In his most famous First Amendment decision, Chief Justice Rehnquist wrote for a unanimous Court in Hustler Magazine v. Falwell (1988), ruling that pornographer Larry Flynt had a First Amendment right to parody and lampoon evangelist Jerry Falwell. Rehnquist was clearly uncomfortable with the Court’s role in the election dispute—and perhaps by how his Court’s legacy would be marked by it. He said in his yearend report on January 1, 2001, that he hoped the Court would never be in such a position again.

It is always possible for the court to overreach its proper bounds and perhaps declare a lot of laws unconstitutional and frustrate the will of the majority in a way that it ought not be frustrated.

2006-06-01 William Rehnquist, the sixteenth chief justice of the United States of America, was an eminent jurist and a member of the conservative wing of the court. He presided over many important and significant cases in his long career and considered himself as an ‘apostle of judicial restraint’. The Rehnquist court has also been pro-business in making it more difficult for individuals to sue companies particularly in the case of environmental damage. There seems to have been an ideological influence on the Rehnquist court from the Chicago School of economics which teaches undying faith in the market and its ability to self regulate.
