I had always thought of the Loggerhead Shrike as a silent masked marauder. When I encountered one 'singing' today I captured this short, handheld video.

The Loggerhead Shrike is a songbird with a raptor’s habits. A denizen of grasslands and other open habitats throughout much of North America, this masked black, white, and gray predator hunts from utility poles, fence posts and other conspicuous perches, preying on insects, birds, lizards, and small mammals.

The loggerhead shrike has a darker gray back and has a more extensive black mask that covers or includes its small bill and above the eye. It is smaller than the northern shrike, but has a large head in proportion to its body (which is the feature that gives this bird its name). Both shrikes also have a distinctive flight. The loggerhead shrike is a medium-sized passerine. "Loggerhead" refers to the relatively large size of the head as compared to the rest of the body. The wing and tail length are about 3.82 and 3.87 inches long, respectively. It weighs on average 50 grams, with a range of 45-60 grams for a healthy adult shrike.
